For the 10th year the City of South Miami has been recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a 2021 Tree City USA "to honor its commitment to effective urban forest management." The letter announcing this honor goes on to say, "Urban tree plantings help reduce energy consumption by up to 25%, which will reduce general energy costs and help with the overall cooling of the city as well. ... Trees also positively affect the local ecosystem by helping to clean water ..." and air.

"PHSS is busy as ever caring for sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife. We currently have 100 patients in care, with 70 of them being babies! Most of these youngsters are fed every hour - some of them every 30 minutes. These growing birds require lots of time, care, and food to grow big and strong. Luckily, we've made it easy for you to directly help these babies by stocking our Amazon wish list with much-needed items. Take a look to see if anything catches your eye... we and the birds thank you!

Last year a draft Ordinance (referred to as the RTZ Oradinance) was introduced by Commissioner (District 1) Gilbert, Vice-Chair of Miami-Dade County Commission. He is, also, the Chair of Miami-Dade County Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) and Chair of Southeast Florida Transportation Council (SEFTC).

Since its introduction the draft has gone through some revisions. The original proposed that all development within the square mile through South Miami - 1/2 mile on either side along US1 - be regulated by the County and be significantly up-zoned. Had the original been adopted, I calculated it would have meant an increase of about 8.6 times the number of residents when it was fully built out. Our Planning and Zoning Director came up with 18.7 times. The calculations are here.

Here's the letter I wrote. The Miami-Dade County League of Cities was able to work with Commissioner Gilbert's staff to amend the original. The current revision is not as drastic as the original. For now the draft allows the cities to govern development along the Rapid Transit Corridors with the understanding that the cities will provide for increased zoning along those corridors within their boundaries. (The current draft is here.)

"The Florida Hometown Heroes Housing Program makes homeownership affordable for eligible frontline community workers such as law enforcement officers, firefighters, educators, healthcare professionals, childcare employees, and active military or veterans.

This program provides down payment and closing cost assistance to first-time, income-qualified homebuyers so they can purchase a primary residence in the community in which they work and serve."

"The nonprofit SELF (Solar and Energy Loan Fund) is opening a satellite office in the Miami-Dade community, thanks to the support of Miami-Dade County. A $300,000 grant from the County will scale SELF's operations to provide $3 million in financing for more than 250 sustainable home renovation projects in Miami-Dade County.

SELF was founded 12 years ago ... to help working-class homeowners, single-mothers, veterans, and people with poor credit access low-cost financing for critical home repairs and improvements.

As a federally certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), SELF focuses on low-and moderate-income homeowners. SELF recently developed new lending programs for landlords and green builders who wish to retrofit older buildings or build new affordable housing projects. SELF raises loan capital from faith-based organizations, Bank CRA investments, and global crowdfunding. SELF's loans are unsecured, with fixed interest rates as low as 5%. The typical amount ranges from $5,000-to $15,000.

The City of South Miami's Health Facilities Authority needs members. At this time, there are not enough members for the Authority to do its work. The Authority meets infrequently. Please contact someone on the Commission it you are interested in being appointed.

Please be careful not to let what you drop and garden cuttings be washed down a storm drain. The health of Biscayne Bay depends on clean water being released into it.

On Wednesday a well-known South Miami businessman went online to speak about the upcoming City election. In his emphatic talk, he mentioned the Commission Meeting that was held on June 7th. In that meeting, he intimated that I had acted like a dictator. He went on to say that I had "tried to get a Commissioner removed." I went through the video of that meeting, and I must say that the speaker's interpretation of events is quite different from mine. I invite anyone who credits his version of my behavior, please to contact me: I have a beautiful antique bridge you might want to buy.

Stay healthy and keep safe!
