As the safety and well-being of volunteers and clients are of primary concern, safety protocols will be observed, including: the wearing of masks, social distancing, sanitizing of hands and work spaces.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, taxpayers will be seen by appointment only. You may stop by any site on the day the program is operating there to make an appointment and pick up an intake packet. Appointments are also being taken by telephone at the three sites listed below, but it will be incumbent upon the taxpayer to pick up an intake packet from the site in order to have a confirmed appointment. Taxpayers must review the information in the intake packets and complete the intake forms prior to their appointments. Required documentation includes: government-issued picture ID for taxpayer and spouse (if married filing jointly); proof of Social Security number for all individuals included in the tax return (i.e., original social security card, letter from a government agency showing full name and social security number, or previous year's tax return prepared by the AARP Tax-Aide Program); plus all income and pertinent tax documents.

Below are the sites where taxpayers may call to make appointments and pick up intake packets:

- Gibson-Bethel Community Center: 305-668-3876

- Homestead Community Center: 305-245-4934

- Pinecrest Branch Library: 305-668-4571

Unethia V. Fox is Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ new Teacher of the Year. She graduated from South Miami Senior High, and she has been teaching there for 19 years.

Superintendent Alberto Carvalho handed her the 2023 Francisco R. Walker Teacher of the Year award during a ceremony on Thursday evening, February 3, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Miami Airport & Convention Center.

Fox, 41, wears many hats. She is a special education mathematics teacher and the head coach of the girls’ basketball, volleyball, flag football, and track teams.

She is also passionate about African-American history, community service and is a member of the Educational Excellence School Advisory Council Committee.

In addition to what Andrea Torres wrote above, I learned that this new Teacher of the Year was born and raised in South Miami!

Stay healthy; keep safe!
